The only song I've listened to more often than Outkast's Spottieottiedopaliscious this past week (including the hour-long loop of the horn section, which I've listened to at least twice a day, yay unemployment!) is this gem from the Django Unchained soundtrack:
That's a remix that goes by the name of Unchained, which combines the James Brown classic The Payback and 2Pac's Untouchable; the official video is just scenes from the Quentin Tarantino movie (expertly) spliced together to fit the narrative. Officially, Tarantino is listed as the director.
Should you not know who Tarantino is, he's a groundbreaking film director and the best screenwriter of the 1990s. The three films he wrote but didn't direct are True Romance (1993, Tony Scott), Natural Born Killers (1994, Oliver Stone) and From Dusk Till Dawn (1995, Robert Rodriguez).

Yes, I'm bringing this feature back.

Things I Listened To In 2014
I'm too out of it to make a normal ''best of'' list with rankings and stuff. Also, there weren't that many records I purchased that made me want to listen to them all the way through repeatedly. Perhaps it's because Radiohead didn't release anything, or I've become jaded. Or music sucks now. Wait, no, that's not true: Against Me!'s record, from start to finish, made my summer and fall. That, my friends, is how you make music with a message.
What I know for sure is that the song I listened to the most in the first six months - by a fair margin - was totally outside of my usual comfort zone: Lady Gaga's Do What U Want (both the version with R. Kelly and the one with Christina Aguilera, which ended up being my favourite).
But in the past month, The Osmonds' Crazy Horses, from their 1972 record of the same name, has been spinning on YouTube, in my mp3 player and as a ring tone nearly non-stop. I have listened to it more than any other songs - not only combined, but times three. If I end up killing myself, that song may be to blame (you're welcome to put Donny Osmond on trial, though he barely played wheezing keyboard on the track).
2014 also saw me listen to a lot of music from years past, namely Nine Inch Nails' fantastic 2013 opus Hesitation Marks (as well as a lot of their 1994 tour de force The Downward Spiral), a lot of Ice Cube, six or seven Jay Z songs over and over, some Beyoncé from last year, Nirvana's In Utero, Pearl Jam's entire discography up to Binaural, with maybe three songs each off their last four records, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Megadeth's Countdown To Extinction, some Suicidal Tendencies, and a ton of Montréal bands.
But 2014?

In the same way that I didn't let Bob Gainey's term as GM hinder on his tremendous captaincy, I didn't let Toe Blake's stint as perhaps the greatest NHL coach of all time push him through the top-5.
Guy Carbonneau remains perhaps the greatest defensive centerman and face-off specialist the NHL has ever known, and as captain, was the only opponent to ever shut down Wayne Gretzky in a Stanley Cup Final. And while Serge Savard and Doug Harvey stand as two of perhaps the 5 greatest defensemen the NHL has ever known, their short stints as captains didn't define their respective careers.
The Richard brothers were a no-brainer, as was putting Jean Béliveau first, and Butch Bouchard makes his way into the top-3 because he was, after all, the one who made the Rocket who he became, by convincing him of following his conscience and showing him how to behave at the NHL level with the hard head he had.
Saku Koivu could have passed Newsy Lalonde, but having not won Stanley Cups in Montréal is a deterrent, though he was often the only player of his caliber on the team, so he was in no way to blame.
And Sylvio Mantha deserves to be on this list, although he rarely makes these, because he played so long ago; however, as a kid from NDG, I am well-versed in the historic nature of what my neighbourhood represents to hockey history.

In the same way that I didn't let Bob Gainey's term as GM hinder on his tremendous captaincy, I didn't let Toe Blake's stint as perhaps the greatest NHL coach of all time push him through the top-5.
Guy Carbonneau remains perhaps the greatest defensive centerman and face-off specialist the NHL has ever known, and as captain, was the only opponent to ever shut down Wayne Gretzky in a Stanley Cup Final. And while Serge Savard and Doug Harvey stand as two of perhaps the 5 greatest defensemen the NHL has ever known, their short stints as captains didn't define their respective careers.
The Richard brothers were a no-brainer, as was putting Jean Béliveau first, and Butch Bouchard makes his way into the top-3 because he was, after all, the one who made the Rocket who he became, by convincing him of following his conscience and showing him how to behave at the NHL level with the hard head he had.
Saku Koivu could have passed Newsy Lalonde, but having not won Stanley Cups in Montréal is a deterrent, though he was often the only player of his caliber on the team, so he was in no way to blame.
And Sylvio Mantha deserves to be on this list, although he rarely makes these, because he played so long ago; however, as a kid from NDG, I am well-versed in the historic nature of what my neighbourhood represents to hockey history.

Alright, so I followed rules for this one: just the band, and no more than two guests, which excludes The Band's The Last Waltz, Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert, and The Rolling Stones' Rock And Roll Circus. Also, official releases only - and by that I meant none of Pearl Jam's (sometimes amazing) live bootlegs, though both their Live (On Two, On Ten) Legs were eligible; none of Bob Dylan's bootleg series, either, so no Royal Albert Hall. And because it's hard to pinpoint which 1970s and 1980s live albums had no studio overdubs, I couldn't instill a rule that said ''no overdubs'', which technically allows Kiss' Alive an entry, despite perhaps being 99% re-recorded.
Honorable mentions: MC5 (Kick Out The Jams), The Talking Heads (The Name Of The Band Is), Bob Seger (Live Bullet), Jimi Hendrix (Message To Love: At The Isle Of Wight 1970), Leonard Cohen (Live In London), Cream (Live Cream Volume II), Page & Plant (Unledded), Jane's Addiction (Jane's Addiction), U2 (Under A Blood Red Sky), The Roots (Come Alive), Bob Marley & The Wailers (Live!), Rush (Exit... Stage Left), James Brown (Live At The Apollo), Cypress Hill (Live At The Fillmore), Rage Against The Machine (Live At The Grand Olympic Auditorium), and The Allman Brothers Band (Live At The Fillmore East).
Had Pearl Jam released their own MTV Unplugged as a stand-alone release rather than coupled with the re-editon of Ten, it'd have cracked my top-3.
And, no, no Peter Frampton (Frampton Comes Alive, Frampton Come Alive II) - I'll show you the way to the door, and baby you won't love my way, any day; no Cheap Trick (Live At Budokan) either, and anyone who says the contrary is either a nostalgic baby-boomer or has been raised/brainwashed by one, and deserves to go to hell and perpetually listen to Iron Maiden's Live After Death. Didn't I hear you crying? Then fuck off.
Also, no jazz, because let's face it: a shitload of those golden-era records were cut live, and the line-ups changed so much they were mostly just all-star teams with a different MVP on the cover; the same twelve guys would be interchangeable in sets of three, four or five and just go out playing, it'd be too hard to decipher where one line-up trumps the other one and why, then force-feed them into the rock/pop/blues-based idiom for comparison.
