Video Of The Week: Queens Of The Stone Age

It's funny, I had a pretty great week, full of sunshine, promise, good times, outings with friends... and yet the only video I thought to feature was an apocalyptic heavy rock animated video by Queens Of The Stone Age.

This time, the hard rocking unit led by former Kyuss frontman Josh Homme (with Dave Grohl on drums, Josh Van Leeuwen on guitar, synths, percussion and backing vocals, Michael Shuman on bass, percussion and backing vocals and Dean Ferttita on guitar) enlisted animator Liam Brazier to use characters created by Boneface (who designed the ... Like Clockwork album art) to create this angry, Todd MacFarlane-like world for the video for My God is The Sun:

Lana Del Rey Vs Courtney Love

It started with this, a pretty bad live cover of Nirvana's masterpiece Heart-Shaped Box by fame-starved Lana Del Rey:



Then the internet erupted and, as masses tend to do, decided the piece of crap was marvelous. It was not. The crowd went nuts because it recognized the song, not because she made it better or anything.

The only one who seems to have some clarity on the subject is Courney Love when she took to Twitter, but like all things Courtney, it quickly went downhill:

Now, there might be something to be said about picturing Del Rey locked inside Love's ''heart-shaped box... for... weeks'', but I'm sure Kurt Cobain wrote that literally, as in ''it's such a big fucking cave I can't find my way out'' kind of thing.

In any event, I'm glad Courtney's taking the song back from that hack Del Rey. She's bat-shit crazy (well, they probably both are), borderline talentless (again...)... ah, fuck it: only Dave Grohl should sing it now.

A Denial, A Denial, A Denial, A Denial, A Deniaaallllllllll

Through the handy work of their bass player Nate Mendel, who has read one too many of the wrong books, Dave Grohl's legacy as a genuine rock icon has taken a dive of late, amid reports of the band fully supporting the claims of an organization called Alive And Well, which denies a link between HIV and AIDS, says HIV cannot be transmitted through sex (and that AIDS is all about anal). They also encourage people to NOT practice safe sex.

The Foos have played benefit shows for A&W already and are saying they will play more, attracting hordes of teens and young adults when, in the U.S., 25% of HIV cases concern people aged 13-25.

Foo Fighters being Grohl's baby - with him writing most of the material - this could possibly have a huge negative impact on his credibility in other areas where he might be tempted to use his fame and recognition to advance causes.

Ah, Queens Of The Stone Age. They're the band I've been listening to the most lately, and I'm probably going to be playing this song at my next show, November 3rd, at Piranha Bar (pardon the plug).

Sure, I've made them Video Of The Week before, but who cares? Good music is good music, and theirs is great. Plus this song features Dave Grohl on drums - not just in the video, but also on the original recording. And lest we forget, Grohl, like bandleader Josh Homme, is also a drummer who is a singer-guitarist in another band (Homme plays drums for the Eagles Of Death Metal, and I'm sure you've heard of Grohl's Foo Fighters).
