Video Of The Week: Laidback

Note: this was supposed to go up last week, but this piece went up instead. So here's what I had written last week:

Oh, sure, this week's Video Of The Week carries more than its share of cheese, but one thing I admire about these white-reggae musicians is just that - they don't take themselves seriously and realize they're just cashing in on a style other people play better. Unlike, say, The Police, who have no clue they're stealing from better musicians with more important things to say.

Laidback are Danish and started in 1979; although they are still around and performing, they do realize their heyday was from the middle of 1982 until the end of 1983, on the strength of this single, Sunshine Reggae, and their bigger worldwide hit White Horse, which has been sampled over and over in hip hop, most notably by 2 Live Crew (Get The Fuck Out Of My House) and Monifah (Touch It).

Every summer, though, for at least one week, this song invariably gets stuck in my head.
